Sneak a Peek! Here is a little taste of the hand painted rustic elegance custom wedding invitations design I created for Sydney and Christopher. I love the couple standing in the doorway of the barn. Inside this custom-made booklet style invitation is lovely sparkling blue card stock with an overlay of thick white invitation card boasting their blue wording. On the left inside, outdoor globe lighting strings are hand illustrated to give the guests a glimpse of the venue. I will post more photos on My Personal Artist Blog very soon.

Behind The Scenes ~ In the Studio

What a lovely Wednesday! James, my mother Pamela, and I are busy as bees! Right now in the studio, my mother is hand-tailoring these peony wedding invitations for Jessica and Benjamin. I am in love with the pink, champagne, and green colors. It reminds me of Spring days!

The sun is streaming in the studio window and the sky is blue. I've spotted and heard MANY blue jay birds and robins in the area. That can only mean one thing... spring is closer than ever! One more month of snow on the ground, maybe? Until then, I will continue to paint flowers and lose myself in floral invitations and tropical, beach wedding invitations scenes. Ahhh ... I'm in heaven! xo

We used 1,232 Glue Dots on Lynn's daughter's custom pocket folder beach wedding invitations shown above. Each invitation was nestled in an invitation box with hand-folded aqua tissue paper and hand-tied wraphia bow. When the boxed is closed, a matching 2 layer custom label boasting my hand drawn starfish gave the guests a hint of the beach themed invitation design inside. We are so delighted that Lynn and her family are pleased. xo

Wet Paint! On July 10th I finished this custom hand painted Hotel del Coronado painting for Janet’s daughter’s custom wedding stationery. Weird thing. I painted this before I received the photo (first photo above) from Janet. I’m glad it is almost identical to what she sent. Lucky because this custom painting almost took 3 hours.

Angela approached me and requested a custom designed mountain themed letterpress invitation based on the photograph above (top photo). She wanted a simple hand drawn invitation design. Her save the dates (not shown) featured the same mountain themed illustration in white on an all chocolate brown background. Next, I’ll upload the art to my zazzle.com account so she can enjoy the hand drawn mountain illustration on her stamps also.

Today is my last "day off" before heading back into the studio. I am looking forward to spending quality "watercolor" time with our 11 year old son, Logan, this afternoon. Above are two samples of his work he did when he was 10. He lightly, freehand sketches with a pencil then adds splashes of watercolor details. He is an amazing son and gifted artist. I am happy I've been able to spend so much time with him this Thanksgiving break. (:

I just read on wedding bee about the trouble a bride is having putting together her navy and yellow color scheme wedding. I of course immediately jumped over to the Style Circle and whipped up this inspiration board delight with her in mind.

Remember, when planning your wedding color scheme, you do not have to overboard. Navy doesn't have to be just navy. You can feature navy, royal and a blue violet! A splash of "navy" here and there with a tiny dash of yellow is just right!

Frankly calligraphy is a nightmare for a perfectionist. {I am not perfect, I try to do things perfectly.} As each line, curve must be perfect. So HOW is it I can paint flowers, tropical scenes, etc. in such detail. BUT calligraphy is a true challenge for my hand? Most of my paintings are 8.5" x 11" so maybe if the letter were also large, I would better succeed. At any rate... I will continue to practice and enjoy calligraphy as a hobby. WHO knows what will happen? :-)

I prefer that calligraphy be handwritten. However if you must use fonts to mimic this truly spectacular craft I suggest the following fonts / typestyles:

Anemone Flower Wedding Theme

Kristen wanted a custom invitation for her wedding featuring Anemone flowers. This flower is ADORABLE. Anemone means "WIND" in Greek. And is known as the "WIND FLOWER" as they thought the wind caused it to bloom. Soooo Sweet. Don't you think?

Kristen's custom wedding invitations with anemone flowers is simple and vintage. Light tan metallic coverstock, layered w/ black coverstock and thick white coverstock. Each Anemone is finished off HAND-PAINTED in a very light blush watercolor. Each invite is truly one-of-a-kind.

I have been designing wedding invitations for 11 years. I normally illustrate VERY large blooms. I must say this simple flower stole my heart.

Adirondack chair favors / place cards

Our dear friend Karen approached James and I regarding her husband's retirement party.

You see they have the cutest YELLOW adirondack chairs on their deck.
They retire there in the evenings to watch the sunset over the lake.

I couldn't resist.

Their invites featured yellow adirondack chairs motif with blue wave board representing the lake. The place cards were miniature yellow adirondack chairs.

When the guests were finished eating they joined together at Karen's house. They really enjoyed seeing their TRUE life size yellow adirondack chairs on the deck.

I truly feel a THEME is necessary for EVERY party. A party without a theme is like a cake without icing. It is just wrong.

When throwing a party or wedding, think about what REPRESENTS YOU or the guest of honor. Incorporate the theme / motif on the invite, favor tags, menus, place cards, table cards, thank you cards, and more!

Isn't making memories fun!

Party Pom Pom Decorations

Pom-Poms and Luminarias

Joyous bursts of color dance above a table, imparting a cheerful radiance to a rehearsal dinner or casual reception. The dahlialike pom-poms appear to float in the air; in reality they are hung from the ceiling with monofilament. Echoing the vibrant hanging puffs, pom-pom napkin rings in citrus shades adorn each place setting. Square glass vessels in various sizes line tables. Covered in sunset-hued tissue (cut to size and secured with double-sided tape), they cast a soft glow.

How to Make the Pom-Poms
You'll need tissue paper and 24-gauge white cloth-covered floral wire.

Hanging Pom-Poms
1. Stack eight 20-by-30-inch sheets of tissue. Make 1 1/2-inchwide accordion folds, creasing with each fold.

2. Fold an 18-inch piece of floral wire in half, and slip over center of folded tissue; twist. With scissors, trim ends of tissue into rounded or pointy shapes.

3. Separate layers, pulling away from center one at a time.

4. Tie a length of monofilament to floral wire for hanging.

Napkin Rings
With just a few changes, these follow the same steps as the hanging pom-poms.

1. Stack four sheets of tissue. Cut a 10-by-5-inch rectangle, going through all layers. Make 3/8-inch-wide accordion folds.

2. Fold an 18-inch piece of floral wire in half, slip over center of tissue, and twist to secure. Trim ends of tissue.

3. Separate layers, pulling away from center one at a time.

4. Bend wire into a loop to fit around napkin, and twist end around loop to secure.

How to Word Gifts on an Invitation

The question is often asked here at My Personal Artist, "How do I word we want money for our wedding gift?" or "How do we word we do not want any wedding gifts?"

In my opinion and that of many guests (trust me they have called us!) it is NOT proper to print such details on a wedding invitation. Nor is it proper to do so on an alternative card that will be mailed with your wedding invitation.

On your bridal shower invitation, that is a different story. The person giving the party is allowed to give their guests gift ideas FOR YOU! That is fantastic. Your guests should remember where you are registered for your wedding day then. Parents, Grandparents, Aunts and bridesmaids can verbally tell the guests gift ideas when asked. If you still feel your guests do not know what to give you on your special day tell a vociferous relative and they will certainly get the word out for you!

Another popular idea is to include your wedding website on your alternative card this way your guests will go to your website and see your personal REGISTRY link there. Many of our couples we have worked with do this. TheKnot.com offers free wedding websites for you to enjoy!

Remember, during these tough economic times guests certainly don't want to be told how to spend their money. Let's get back to the basics and enjoy each others company and the simple things in life, like LOVE.

Rose Ice Cubes by Jonathan Fong Style

For a truly romantic evening, whether it’s for Valentine’s Day or an anniversary, show your love with this wine bucket filled with roses encased in ice. They’ll melt any heart.

Is it edible?

Most roses are indeed edible. However, many growers use pesticides on the roses, so I would avoid putting these ice cubes in drinks unless you’re sure there were no chemicals used. Just use the ice to cool the wine or champagne bottle.

What you’ll need:

(per ice tray)

12 spray roses (the small ones)

12 twist ties

2 wooden skewers

1 ice tray

Floral tape

1. To keep the roses submerged in the ice trays, we have to build a framework that will weigh them down. Cut the spray roses, leaving about 2 inches of stem, and use twist ties to attach the stems to the skewers.

2. Place the roses, which are attached to the skewers, upside down in their individual ice compartments of the tray.

3. Tape down the skewers at the ends of the ice tray to keep everything from floating when you add water. Your ice tray should look like the one in the photo.

4. Add water to the ice tray and freeze overnight.
